Employment and Education

The Issues

  • Small business development
  • Tourism development
  • Adult education classes

Job creation within the parish is important.  Small local businesses that do not intrude on the landscape should be encouraged whilst ensuring the continuing existence of traditional agricultural based employment opportunities.  Small-scale tourist enterprises and small businesses such as architect or financial services might be suitable.  Typical partners might include the Prince’s Trust.

Under grounding unsightly cables, encouraging more B&B, organising open garden days and  re-entering Britain in Bloom would help to attract visitors.  Dartmoor Railway and bus operators could provide links to the village.

According to the survey results, adult education classes would be well supported, language learning, local history and DIY being popular choices.  A reading group and computer training were also felt to be worthwhile.  More amenable conditions for these activities would become available when the refurbishment of the village hall can be achieved.
